Further to last week’s post about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), one of the points made referred to keywords, “50% of search queries that are made have at least 4 or more words.”

This week’s article, Why You Should Target Topics, Not Keywords, discusses how the way we search is changing with the influx of all the new devices. For example, Andy Crestodina of Orbit Media, suggests that “one important way that Google is changing for its users’ changing queries is that it’s becoming more semantic vs. keyword-oriented”, meaning that Google will be looking for related meanings, not just related keywords.

The article is definitely detailed, but worth the read!

Here at Simply Effective we specialize in WordPress installation/customization. WordPress is actually already technically quite a good platform for SEO and comes ready to embrace search engines. Its features and functions guide a search engine through the pages, posts and categories to help the search engine crawl your site from page to page and gather the information it needs to include your site within its database. That said, it doesn’t mean you can’t improve it further with a few tweaks here and there!

Content is still king when it comes to search engines! The words, the content, the material in your site that explains, shares, informs and educates your site visitors is the content search engines digest. While moving through your site a search engine gathers content and information by evaluating the words, giving credit to certain words and combinations of words. Words found within your pages are compared to words found within your links and titles. Good navigational links to the various pages on your site will invite a search engine to move gracefully from one page to another, following the connecting links and visiting most of your site.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can still be a little daunting with all it’s rules that change periodically. The article, 16 SEO FAQs We Still Struggle to Understand, is a great overview to help us understand how to make a few basic improvements to this important aspect of our websites.

There are plenty of fun things to do with your family and friends this long weekend in Calgary.

Many families visit Heritage Park and take a trip back through time, while others take in the festivities at Prince’s Island Park or at the Inglewood Sunfest.

Enjoy all the fabulous Music Fests, Shakespeare by the Bow or even a visit to our local museums. Fort Calgary, won’t disappoint. It celebrates Alberta’s Heritage Day with interpretive tours, movies, crafts, face paintings, a treasure hunt and genealogy presentations. Something for everyone!

Over the summer months we’ve been busing working on website re-designs for numerous clients. This most recent face-lift involves revamping our client, US Flood Control’s, website to reflect the new direction they’re taking their business. They wanted to replace their outdated site with an updated visual presence in WordPress, and with the ability to manage their own website content as time and inclination permits.

It never hurts to freshen up a site that’s been around for awhile! The key is to ensure that the core message being communicated, especially if successful, remains in tact. Together, along with our client, we have created a website that speaks specifically to their target audience…a bold, new, fresh look…one that stands out from the rest.

Here’s a peek at the design concept! Please the live site at to view the finished product.

Here at Simply Effective we’re excited to announce that we’ve launched our client’s new website and we wish the team at Quality Mortgage Centre the best of luck in all future endeavors. Visit live site at
